A reward of five thousand dollars is offered, by Phil Ocumpaugh, to whoever will give such information as will lead to the recovery, alive or dead, of his six year old daughter, Gwendolen, missing since the afternoon of August the 16th, from her home in New York.
Anna Katharine Green was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. She is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective.
The Millionaire Baby (Audible Audio Edition) Anna Katharine Green Dawn Larsen SAGA Egmont Books
In "The Millionaire Baby", a young detective has more than one reason for desperately wanting to solve the mysterious case of little Gwendolen, a millionaire's daughter who disappeared on a hot August day from right under the nose of her nurse. Was the little girl, who appears to have been everybody's darling, kidnapped for money? Nobody comes forward asking for a ransom. Did she sneak down to the river and drown? One of her shoes, found on the slope, seems to point in that direction. No wonder then that her mother will not let go of her conviction that the small body will be dragged up from the water.
Our young detective has had dealings with the family before, which facilitates his access to the house and grounds. He soon meets the widow living next door, a close friend of the bereft mother. Something does not quite add up with neither mother nor neighbour - but then there are several other characters offering clues. Or are they red herrings?
Everything happens within a few short days, and of course you can be sure that the detective not only solves the case (although not without some surprising twists), but also a budding romance looks promising for him.
I did find some of the conversation and accompanying thoughts unnecessarily lengthy at times, but generally, the story marches along at a good pace. No swear words, no steamy sex scenes and no violence - after all, the novel was first published in 1905.
Guessing part of the solution was not all that hard, but there were still a few riddles in store for me. All things considered, a good old-fashioned mystery, although not a "must read".

The Millionaire Baby (Audible Audio Edition) Anna Katharine Green Dawn Larsen SAGA Egmont Books Reviews
I found my first Green novel entertaining, but she pales quickly with her overuse of cosmically ridiculous coincidences, and breathtakingly beautiful women who so faithfully and devotedly love their husbands to the point where you want to smack them and ask "Really? You would do that? With a straight face?"
Overblown, over dramatic, and just silly, but still a decent read if you have nothing else, although you could see the end of this one by a quarter way through.
I love Books written by Katherine Green
.she brings life to the characters. Her books are full of intrigue and the background very interesting.
any of the millionaire books are very good reading . they have a very good story line and a good ending. they are just feel good books
Very interesting premise and unable to put down. One can see how things have changed drastically from one century to another.
This story takes place in the early 20th century and seem to be written in a style of that time period. The main charcter who is investigating the missing baby seem to be the American version of Sherlock Holmes. Not very much of a mystery by todays standards Would not recommend this novel.
Bought the hardcover book at a used book sale. It was missing 6 pages and read it years ago. So glad to have the full book. I enjoyed it, again.
A Victorian, but very modern story of complications, misunderstandings and almost disastrous results. Anna Katharine Green had a vibrant imagination and ideas that went far beyond the era in which she lived. She had an amazing talent and obviously enjoyed writing her mysteries. She could only rely on her amazing literary talent to illustrate the mystery. Her understanding of psychology and human nature add to the serious mixture.just imagine if she had a computer, but Anna did very well with her typewriter!
